What is a Sattvik Diet?

We all know what kind of food makes us lose weight and what makes us put on weight. But have you ever noticed how eating some kind of foods makes us feel nice and happy, while some others make us feel heavy and lethargic? Yes, food not only has an impact on our body but on our mind as well. Actually, food can also determine our mood. Seeing a nice plate of butter chicken and naan might make us happy on seeing it… But after finishing it? Not so much, right?

We have already explained about the three Gunas that govern our mind - Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. But did you know that food also has these qualities? And through our diet, we can control which Guna we want to become the primary Guna that runs our mind and our thoughts. Originally, a Sattvik diet was devised to gain higher consciousness for the Yogis, sages and spiritual men. Yes, this is the purest diet recommended for a consciously healthy life.

So let's talk about a Sattvik diet, which consists of Sattvik foods:

  • These are foods that are nourishing, soothing and help sharpen the mind, making it more aware and active.
  • Sattvik foods are vegetarian – foods that are not derived from any animal sources after harming them.
  • But yes, a vegetable that has been grown with a lot of pesticides in it will not be considered Sattvik in nature.
  • These are foods that are free from chemicals, preservatives, artificial colors and flavors.
  • Even canned foods should be disregarded. There goes half the food we eat, right?

So what does a Sattvik diet consist of?

  • Organic and fresh fruits and vegetables that have been grown and picked with love.
  • Whole grains.
  • Nuts.
  • Beans and lentils.
  • Dairy products like milk and ghee.
  • Oils those are healthy; mostly derived from plants.
  • Foods those are not overly sweet.
  • Honey.
  • Spices which are beneficial for the body and mind.

But again! Just getting these ingredients and cooking something up does not make it Sattvik in nature. To make food Sattvik, one has to ensure that it is made in a clean, calm and pleasant place. How the vegetables are cut, the proportions of the food and spices, as well as tender, loving care - all these are what boost the Sattvik nature of the meal.

Here are the benefits of a Sattvik diet:

  • Nourishes the body and the Dhatus.
  • Calms and purifies the mind.
  • Provides physical strength.
  • Promotes longevity.
  • Makes sure there is a balanced flow of energy.
  • Cleanses and regulates the bodily functions.
  • Is easy to digest. Makes the body and the mind feel light.

Another thing to keep in mind for a Sattvik diet is that all the six tastes as per Ayurveda should be in balance, and one should make sure not to overeat… rather eat in moderate portions.

Switching to a Sattvik diet may not immediately show results, but with perseverance and patience, it will definitely make a difference. A Sattvik diet will not only make one feel healthier, but will make sure that they think healthier as well!
